Sustainability
at Honokeana Cove
A Native Hawaiian tradition is Mālama ‘Āina, meaning caring for and protecting the land. This commitment is also called “Sustainability.” At Honokeana Cove we honor ‘Āina by showing Aloha to the environment in many ways:
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
• Renewable Energy: On most days, photoelectric solar panels on our roofs supply 100% of the energy we use, both day and night, with the help of a battery for the evening hours. (On rainy days we supplement with power from Maui Electric.)
• Efficient Lighting: Our units extensively use LED bulbs and fixtures, and switches that can dim the lights when full brightness is not needed.
• Energy Savings: To reduce energy use, after you have checked in we don’t provide further housekeeping and change of linens except when requested. We charge for those extra services to discourage their over-use.
WATER CONSERVATION
• Filtered Water: We dispense filtered water free to our guests, so that they can refill their water bottles and generate less plastic waste.
• Water Efficiency: Our condos use modern water-efficient toilets as required by Maui code.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
• Herb Garden: Our staff maintains a garden where guests can harvest herbs for use in their cooking. The herbs vary, but at various seasons you may find rosemary, basil, parsley and dill. Besides providing fresh healthy food (“farm to table”!) this reduces waste, because guests won’t need to purchase and discard as many packages of supermarket herbs.
• Recycling: We pay for comprehensive services, with separate bins to collect glass, plastic and metal for recycling.
OUTDOOR SPACES
• Reef Protection: We use reef-safe gardening materials, and our Resident Manager Ray Watson holds a Gold Certification in Reef Friendly Landscaping from Maui Nui Marine Resources Council. We encourage guests to use reef-safe sun lotions, which are the only type available on the island of Maui.
• Landscaping: Our full-time professional gardener Juanito, with the assistance of Resident Manager Ray, honors Maui traditions by maintaining a wide variety of flowering plants in all seasons. There’s even a “living plant wall,” a tree that hosts several orchid varieties.
• Wildlife Protection: We love our year-round population of honu (green sea turtles) and have signs posted alerting guests to keep at least ten feet away from them, as required by State and Federal law. And we have honored our beloved turtles by installing a webcam so you can view them basking on our pebbly beach! (visit honokeana.net/web-cam/).
